What if piglets really could help in making IVF cheaper?

"Scientists have made a discovery in piglets that could decrease the costs associated with in vitro fertilization in people.

Parents seeking to have children through IVF spend between $12,000 and $15,000 each session plus the cost of medications, which could average between $3,000 and $5,000.

Scientists were working with pigs to research stem cells and the mechanisms they use to proliferate, communicate, and grow in the body. During an attempt to improve how they grow the cells, researchers discovered a method that uses a special liquid medium that improves the success of IVF in pigs.

“It was a serendipitous discovery, really,” says R. Michael Roberts, professor of animal sciences at the University of Missouri. “Generally, there are multiple steps to producing viable embryos that we can then implant in pigs and cows involved in our research; however, it’s costly and sometimes yields very little return.

“We were seeking a way to do that more efficiently and stumbled upon a method that may have implications in human fertility clinics as well.”

In IVF involving pigs, scientists first extract oocytes, or eggs from female pigs as well as the “nurse” cells that surround them and place them in a chemical environment designed to mature the eggs. The eggs are then fertilized to create zygotes, or single-celled embryos that are allowed to develop for six days. These embryos are then transferred back into a female pig with the hope of achieving a successful pregnancy and healthy piglets..."

"Axolotl salamanders are extremely resilient, but very little research has been done on their incredible ability to regenerate internal organs and eggs -- also called oocytes. 

In a study published in the journal Stem Cells, Northeastern University biology professor James Monaghan and his team have discovered that these salamanders not only have the capability of re-growing limbs, they can also regenerate their ovaries and produce eggs throughout their lifespan. "When we remove a large portion of the ovary, it activates many endogenous stem cells to repair the organ," said Monaghan, whose graduate student Piril Erler, and research technician Alexandra Sweeney, performed the study. "These salamanders can repair after injury, continue to make large amounts of eggs, and continue to have a hyper-prolific female reproductive system. It's pretty incredible."

Examining the axolotl salamander's ability to regenerate ovaries after a traumatic injury and continue to produce nearly 2,000 eggs a year could lead to the development of regenerative medicines aimed at treating infertility in humans. "We found most of the genes that are expressed in human development and in human ovarian stem cells are also expressed in these salamander ovarian stem cells," said Monaghan..."

New sperm research could lead to cut in infertility rate

"Sperm and mathematics don't appear to be the likeliest of bedfellows -- but new research bringing the two together could lead to devices that could cut infertility rates.

Today sees the start of National Fertility Awareness Week (31 October -- 6 November, 2016) and with infertility affecting about one in six people, a team of mathematicians, bioengineers, computer engineers and clinicians are working on a system that could identify which sperm are able to successfully deliver their cargo of DNA to the egg.

The University of Birmingham research, funded through an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Healthcare Technologies Challenge Award, could then lead to better treatment decisions that would save distress and expense and lead to more healthy births.

Infertility treatments such as IVF are currently hampered by imprecise diagnostics, with the monitoring of sperm not utilising cutting edge technology..."
